Eastern Washington Brewer Wins Big at the Powerhouse

Clubs around the Sound selected Pale Ales to compete against professionally brewed versions in a Pro vs. Ammeter contest at the Powerhouse Brewery in Puyallup. A classic David and Goliath matchup.

James Golovich of Mid Columbia Zymurgy Association took the 1st place score with his American Pale Ale. His award winning beer earned him a custom etched growler from Click Distributing and The Powerhouse.  Second place was a tie going to Jim Brischke and Carey Peltz, and fourth was pale ale from Elysian, Loser Pale.

After the competition Tim Patty served some of his special brews including The Brass Monk, a Belgian strong ale, and his 3 year old barrel aged barleywine.

As a group, we collectively voted on the next style of beer for the next event; a Robust Porter.  The date for the next event is not yet set, but the target is late October.

Thanks again to Tim Patty and Jake Rich of The Powerhouse, Mick Wilcox of Click Distributing and all the brewers from the Washington homebrewing clubs who entered their great beers. Thanks to Jake Rich, restaurant manager and his staff.

Second release from the Puget Sound Pro-Am Competition on Tap at the Rock Bottom Brewery in Bellevue

August 7 marked the date for the release “Saison Du Beacon", a beer developed by two homebrewers, Colin Lenfesty and Rodney Clark. This beer is the gold medal winner in the 2008 Puget Sound Pro-Am competition in the Saison category.

The Saison Du Beacon is a tart and dry beer, deep copper in color with a complex flavor from the Belgian yeast and a variety of spices. It's both thirst quenching and flavorful.

Saison Du Beacon will be entered in the Great American Beer Festival in the ProAm category.

AHA Rally at the Big Time Brewery

Courtesy of Mark Emily

Please don't forget the AHA rally on August 23rd. Several of the beers will be officially released at the event. While the AHA hasn't posted details yet, here's a quick blurb about the event:

There will be an AHA Membership Rally on August 23rd at Big Time Brewery from 5-9 pm. It is looking like we'll be featuring more than half of the Puget Sound Pro-Am beers for your sampling (Big Time, Rock Bottom-Seattle, Rock Bottom-Bellevue, Elysian, Pike, Elliot Bay, and Powerhouse at least). Bill Jenkins, the brewer at Big Time, will be giving tours. Several of the winning Pro-Am brewers will be there in case you want to pick their brains about the scaling up and brewing of their homebrews recipes. We are also trying to make it into a showing of WAHA so you'll be able to meet up with the officers and reps (wear your WAHA shirts!) There should also be some appetizers available and we'll be holding a raffle. Basically just a great time to mingle with fellow beer lovers and homebrewers.

EVERYONE BECOMES AN AHA MEMBER! Join or renew in advance or at the event. A discounted AHA one-year membership rate of $33 will be offered at the door. Once you're a member - entrance is FREE! If you are already an AHA Member, entrance is FREE, but don't miss this great membership rate of $33. Renew at the event! You can also join with a FAMILY MEMBERSHIP rate of $43 (you'll receive one Zymurgy magazine per household and all registered family members (limit 4) become card-carrying AHA Members with full benefits!). This works for "roommates" as well. For designated drivers, entry is free, but does not include an AHA membership.

We encourage people to RSVP in advance at: http://www.beertown.org/events/rally/rsvp.aspx

I could use a few hands running the table up front. Last year Emily got stuck up there for most of the time and she deserves to be able to enjoy herself as well. The third Pro-Am beer, Cascade Cougar, has been released at the Powerhouse Brewery in Puyallup. It is an "Imperial Blonde/IPA," light bodied and very hoppy. This beer was a "recreational selection" and will not be sent to the GABF.

There will be a celebratory get together at Powerhouse on August 19th at about 6 pm. It is half price pint night so if you are around, come on out for a glass! http://www.powerhousebrewpub.com
